Hidden Toxins Affecting You & Your Childs Health!

Posted by myhealthexperts on January 30, 2009

What a coincidence that the day after our “Everything in Moderation?” lecture the news is about mercury contamination being found in many products sweetened with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Now HFCS is bad enough on its own, but many common foods you and your children might consume were found to have mercury in them. Mercury is a dangerous metal and is unsafe in any amount.

Almost half of tested samples of commercial high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) contained mercury, which was also found in nearly a third of 55 popular brand-name food and beverage products where HFCS is the first- or second-highest labeled ingredient, according to two new U.S. studies.

HFCS has replaced sugar as the sweetener in many beverages and foods such as breads, cereals, breakfast bars, lunch meats, yogurts, soups and condiments. On average, Americans consume about 12 teaspoons per day of HFCS, but teens and other high consumers can take in 80 percent more HFCS than average.

Mercury is toxic in all its forms. Given how much high-fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered. We are calling for immediate changes by industry and the [U.S. Food and Drug Administration] to help stop this avoidable mercury contamination of the food supply,” the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy’s Dr. David Wallinga, a co-author of both studies, said in a prepared statement.”

Mercury is found in vaccines, in dental fillings, in foods like fish and HFCS, and in case you didn’t hear, even snow has unusually high levels of mercury. And that’s only one toxin.

Mercury is a factor in allergies, hypersensitivity and all the associated disorders of this, and immune system dysfunction. It can make one more sensitive to dairy and wheat allergies – 2 items I have long advocated people avoid. Worse – doctors are not trained nor aware of chemical toxins affecting our health. Most also do not even know the basics about processed dairy and wheat being issues as well.

Tell me what bothers you? No matter what it is, from weight loss to depression, you name it, there are good chances several toxins are affecting whatever problems you have.

What can we do to counter this? Avoid the known risks like tuna & HFCS, buy organic as much as possible, and consume lots of cilantro! I have become a whiz at using cilantro in many of my recipes!

Everything in Moderation? A New Look

Posted by myhealthexperts on January 27, 2009

If caffeine is toxic - whats moderation?

If caffeine is toxic - whats moderation?

A common phrase I often hear from my clients when asked about their health is ‘everything in moderation.’ But what exactly defines moderation? How do we know that our moderation is really balanced? Are there hidden factors we are unaware of that skew our idea of moderation? Is moderate exposure to toxins a safe and healthy choice?

In this era of increasing health risks such as cancer, infertility, emotional issues like depression and anxiety, and the epidemic of childhood issues like ADD/ADHD and autism – can we afford to wait until after the fact to realize we did not do our best to prepare ourselves and our family?

Dr. Eunice Stagliola, MyHealthExperts resident toxicologist, is going to speak on such issues in the first of her lecture series on ‘Living Toxic’. This lecture is going to be this Wednesday, January 28 at 7 pm at Tommy K’s in Stamford. Seating is limited so RSVP ASAP!

Tommy K’s is at 54 Research Drive, Stamford. Call (203) 325-9544 for directions. Please feel free to share this invitation with others you think may be interested.

Are Toxins Making You Fat (& Sick)?

Posted by myhealthexperts on January 14, 2009

Hidden Toxins Can Make You Fat!

Hidden Toxins Can Make You Fat!

Could be. Read this:

“Ask why diabetes is epidemic in the 21st century and most people will point the finger at bad diet, laziness and obesity. According to a small but growing group of scientists, though, the real culprit is a family of toxic chemicals known as persistent organic pollutants, or POPs. If these researchers are right, POPs – which include some of the most reviled chemicals ever created, including dioxins, DDT and PCBs – may be key players in the web of events that lead people to develop the disease. “ (NewScientist.com 09/15/08)

Diabetes is right there with obesity. And of course in the holistic model we acknowledge that everything is connected – so if POPs can facilitate obesity and diabetes, these in turn can lead to hormone dysfunction, which can effect brain chemistry, leading to emotional problems like depression, anxiety, etc.

Detox is going to be a key focus of mine in 2009 since its become clear its a critical but often overlooked factor in our lives. Once again, more greens and enzyme rich unheated foods are key. Also consider a properly designed detox program. I have a real toxicologist, Eunice Stagliola, PhD, working on creating one for us right now. Stay tuned!

Most Dangerous Foods to Eat?

Posted by myhealthexperts on February 2, 2008

Forget about industrialized meats and processed foods which are typically very unhealthy on their own. With regards to fruits, this study shows the most poisonous:

  • Peaches and apples topped the Dirty Dozen list. Almost 97 percent of peaches tested positive for pesticides, and almost 87 percent had two or more pesticide residues. About 92 percent of apples tested positive, and 79 percent had two or more pesticides. The rest of the Dirty Dozen include sweet bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, pears, imported grapes, spinach, lettuce, and potatoes.
  • Onions, avocados, and sweet corn headed the Consistently Clean list. For all three foods, more than 90 percent of the samples tested had no detectable pesticide residues. Others on the Consistently Clean list include pineapples, mango, asparagus, sweet peas, kiwi, bananas, cabbage, broccoli, and papaya.

There is growing scientific consensus that small doses of pesticides can adversely affect people, especially during vulnerable periods of fetal development and childhood when exposures can have long lasting effects. Because the toxic effects of pesticides are worrisome, not well understood, or in some cases completely unstudied, shoppers are wise to minimize exposure to pesticides whenever possible.

While washing and rinsing fresh produce can reduce levels of some pesticides, it does not eliminate them. Peeling also reduces exposures, but valuable nutrients often go down the drain with the peel. The best option is to eat a varied diet, wash all produce, and choose organic when possible to reduce exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.

Although the Shopper’s Guide only measures pesticide residues on produce, buying organic also makes sense if you’re concerned about bacterial contamination. Organic farmers meet all the sanitation standards required of conventional growers and, on, top of that, meet tight restrictions on the use of compost and other organic material that do not apply to conventional fruit and vegetable growers.

Nutrition: Your Only Hope

Posted by myhealthexperts on January 15, 2008

Summary: In an increasingly contaminated environment our exposure to known and unknown toxins has increased significantly. This has resulted in an increasing array of health (physical and emotional)problems, many of which in all probabililty affect you right now. Increasing nutrition in the body is the only way to help our bodies compensate and effectively remove these poisons before they cause serious harm. Children especially need to have proper nutrition since they are more sensitive to toxins than adults.

Face it, many things we do are unhealthy, even without our knowing it. Exposure to environmental toxins, pesticides and now other chemicals such as plastic compounds in our food, stress, and poor nutrition all take a toll. All produce chemical ‘scars’ (wounds)such as free radical damage, on our bodies. We age faster, gain fat easier and look older sooner. Every day a new company is admitting it sold products that it knew were dangerous, such as Merck and Pfizer selling dangerous drugs like Vioxx and Celebrex, or Dupont that knew its plastics were toxic in their no-stick cookware.

Most of us do not see just how much a threat toxins are to us and especially our children. Children are more sensitive and can pick up toxins from seemingly safe items such as the floors in your house: Walking in the house with shoes leads to increased levels of petroleum based toxins on the floors and carpets that kids get on their hands, and since their hands go into their mouths often – they ingest these toxins.
Nutrition is a compensation factor for all the other unhealthy things we do. Nutrients detoxify the liver, slow free radical damage, facilitate normal functioning of various systems, like our immune system, and in men for example- the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Testicular-Axis (HPTA). They maintain cell membrane integrity and assist in receptor viability. The list goes on and on, detoxification, sex drive, brain chemistry (mental state), are all affected by these natural substances.

The medical model of nutrition is extremely antiquated. I audited a nutrition class for medical students at New York Medical College, and found it lacking scientific validity. How ironic, the teacher (a Physician (a man of science)) is unaware that the themselves show how incredible and effective nutrition and natural compounds really are. The medical model states that all you need is the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) of nutrients – the amount to prevent a “disease of deficiency” for that particular nutrient. So for example, Vitamin C, the RDA is 60 mg. (milligrams). This amount prevents most people from getting scurvy – the disease you get with low Vitamin C levels. It does not optimize health.

And to many, nutrition and supplements are fake and don’t really have any effect. Granted some supplements are hyped up and claims overstated, such as the anti-aging ‘GH’ pills and many of the “Viagra” type products on the market. And the scammers of Enron can be found in this and any industry also. But in truth many herbs and nutrients are very powerful. In fact about 40% of all medications are derived from plants. If you doubt this, do a search on any nutrient you choose on Medline or ChemAbstracts databases. You’ll be surprised at the thousands of scientific studies showing that nutrients are powerful.

So what do you want: to prevent scurvy or maximize your health? Many studies done on farm animals and lab animals(because animals are a business for which maximizing profit is important) show that high levels of nutrients make them healthier, live longer and get less disease. Studies on people also show that most of us are sub-clinically malnourished, we get enough nutrition to not get acute sickness, but not to be healthy. So which do you want – the Medical Model or the Scientific Model? Remember too that disease is how medical and pharmaceutical professionals earn a living. A little conflict of interest here? And we all know how easily people are swayed – just look at the headlines, or look at the Tobacco industry. I often joke that “M.D” stands for “Manage Disease”!

Are Naturalists Who Shun Supplements Correct?
Many health gurus believe that food gives us all the nutrients we need. I disagree. First off, naturally we were designed to live to only about 30-40 years of age. So our bodies did not evolve to require long term nutrition status for maximum longevity. Our bodies evolved to make babies and die by 30 or 40. Living to 80 or more requires a different perspective. Living to 80 or more and having the vitality of a 40 yr old requires an even more cutting-edge perspective. Also our food is not near as healthy as when we were all natural. Food now is processed, heated, cooked, stored etc. all of which depletes nutrition content of the foods. On top of that, we consume much higher (unnatural amounts) of sugar, unhealthy fats, and chemicals not normally found in food, such as xenoestrogens (which mimic estrogen in our bodies with unhealthy results). Every day the list of exposures grows: lipstick & cosmetics, plastics used for water and food, cell phones are just a few.

So, under scrutiny, the natural perspective does not hold up as valid. Unless you wish to die young. And according to the latest research, even 80 is young. People who eat healthy, exercise and take supplements are pushing the boundaries of our idea on aging – we will see more healthy and young looking 80-100 yr old’s in the near future according to researchers. So, optimal levels of Vitamin C are above 1,000 mg per day. Perhaps as high as 5,000 to 10,000 mg. Most primates (our closest relatives) consume 5,000+ mg per day of Vitamin C for example. The list goes on and on, Vitamin A, all B Vitamins, D, E, and so on. And then we have the newest area where other important plant based nutrients are now being discovered. This is the cutting edge for health conscious, anti-aging, and sports performance people. Alpha lipoic acid, grape seed extract, resveratrol, bioflavinoids, flavones, MSN, amino-acid therapies, herbal extracts like green tea.

Nutrition Science: One Example

Let’s take one nutrient and look at what it does. Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) is a key anti-oxidant because it acts on both water and fat soluble reactions to stop free radical proliferation. Even more critical is that ALA acts at the mitochondria(1). In order to burn fats and carbohydrates to give us energy, mitochondria take electrons from oxygen and shuffle them among a suite of molecules in a complex chain reaction. Invariably, some of the electrons get misplaced, creating free radicals. Mitochondria produce more oxidants than any other single site in a cell, the main offenders being superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl radicals. Even worse, unlike DNA in the nucleus, there are no repair mechanisms for mitochondria DNA. This is why many experts think aging and disease begins here, in the mitochondria. This is why ALA is so important! It works at a key area of free radical damage, and it also assists in the metabolism of fats and carbs! In a sense, free radicals are like an engine overheating- and anti-oxidants like ALA act as a cooling system to keep the engine running stronger! ALA also increases the number of Glut-4 receptors on the cell membrane, specifically muscle cells. What does this mean to you? This increases the ability of glucose to be driven into muscle cells instead of fat cells, hence a partioning effect. ALA in doses of 300mg up to 1200 mg are well tolerated and effective.

How good is ALA? In fact Nestle Corporation is applying for a patent on a combination of nutrients to slow aging. And they are both critical mitochondria DNA repair agents: ALA and Acetyl-L-Carnitine(ALCAR). ALCAR is another key nutrient for many aspects. ALCAR has been shown to increase IGF levels(2). It also can reverse DNA damage in the mitochondria(3). When rats, and humans are stressed, cortisol levels rise, and Testosterone drops! This change in hormone levels is what leads to disease and aging. Yet even under stress, which reduced Testosterone levels, ALCAR kept them up(4). It can also have a positive effect on the testes(5) , aiding older men and bodybuilders in post cycle recovery. ALCAR is effective at doses of 1,000mg to 10,000 mg (taken on an empty stomach or with juice.) Dr. Bruce Ames made these two agents famous in his research showing that their combination was a key to slowing down and reversing many effects of aging!

Cosmetics Toxic Dangers

Posted by myhealthexperts on January 13, 2008

I love the so called Health Guru’s and Medical Experts that claim you don’t need dietary supplements. This is fine if you are okay with increasing your risk of cancer, depression, heart disease, infertility….the list goes on and on. Keep trusting those “Authority Figures”!

Here is yet another reason why You Need Added Detox Support from Supplements!!!

(Detox support that MyHealthExperts.com can give you!)

Women ingest anywhere from 7 to 12 POUNDS of lipstick in their lifetime. Did our ancestors have to evolve detox capacity to remove lipstick from their bodies? NO!! You’re body is ill equipped to deal with this and all the modern exposures to toxins we get daily.

How do you think the body gets rid of these toxic poisons?  Detoxification pathways that involve enzymes, amino-acids and vitamins in addition to herbs that also facilitate and enhance these key detox processes.

“Some frightening statements have appeared in press reports in recent months: “Put down the lipstick if you value his sperm.” “In a lifetime a woman eats about 4.5kg of lipstick. Most contain coal tar dyes that are carcinogenic.” “Nail varnish contains some of the most toxic substances in cosmetics including toulene, a central nervous system toxin.” “Powder foundations are up to 80 per cent talc, a known carcinogen.” Is this just scaremongering? Are we exposed to more carcinogens eating burned toast? Consumers are beginning to wake up to the fact that we know very little about the chemicals we slather over our bodies. Irritants, toxins, potential carcinogens (which cause cancer), mutagens (which damage DNA) and teratogens (which cause birth defects) are just some of the chemicals said to be lurking in these feel-good products. (source: http://www.ewg.org/node/15094 )

“Lipsticks tested ranged from high-end $30 Dior lipsticks to drugstore offerings. L’Oreal owns six of the 11 lipsticks with the alleged highest lead content, under the brands of L’Oreal and Maybelline.

The brands with highest lead content included: L’Oreal Colour Riche in True Red and Classic Wine, Maybelline’s Incredifull Lipcolor in Maximum Red, and Christian Dior Addict Positive Red.

The lipsticks do not list lead as an ingredient and there is no FDA requirement to report the level of lead in lipstick, Malkan said.” (source: http://www.ewg.org/node/25632

Toxicity of some common ingredients in cosmetics

The following ingredient assessments include DEA, lanolin, mineral oil, propylene glycol, parabens, artificial colours and fragrances. Specific references are included.

DEA – diethanalomine

DEA is a detergent and emulsifier, frequently used in both cosmetics and shampoos. It is used by itself and in combination as part of cocamide DEA, lauramide etc. In spite of US FDA warnings and recommendations to the cosmetics industry dating back to the 1970’s, concerning the NTP (National Toxicology Program) findings that DEA has a relationship to cancers in animal testing, it is still widely used. The NTP tests revealed that DEA can cause cancer in rats by itself, and it can combine with other chemicals to form nitrosamines which are also cancer causing. They also found that repeated skin application to mouse skin of DEA or cocamide-DEA, induced liver and kidney cancer and accumulated in organs, such as the brain, where it induced chronic toxic effects. DEA is also noted as a mild skin and severe eye irritant.

Propylene glycol

Propylene glycol is frequently mistaken by consumers for ethylene glycol which is a dangerous antifreeze (propylene glycol can also be used for this) that is highly toxic by ingestion. The urban myth/story that my dog licked up the car antifreeze and died, refers to ethylene glycol. There are conflicting opinions about propylene glycol mainly due to the fact that there are several types which are commonly grouped together. They are propylene glycol, propylene glycol alginate and propylene glycol ether, all of which have a different toxicity. Some researchers/writers do not distinguish between them.

Propylene glycol alginate combines propylene glycol with free alginic acid which is isolated from brown algae by a process involving washing out undesirable salts, an alkaline salt extraction procedure, clarifying and treating with mineral salts. There is no chronic toxicity information available but this chemical is permitted in foods.

Propylene glycol ethers are eye irritants, experimental teratogens, have dangerous reproductive effects and are ingestible poisons.6 Propylene glycol ethers are commonly used as co-solvents (aids in mixing oil and water) in cleaning products. They demonstrate easy absorption into the skin and have been suspected of liver and kidney abnormalities.7 They’re used in cleaning because they increase the uptake of oils. Propylene glycol ether has also been noted as an experimental carcinogen in animal tests.

Propylene glycol has been reported as a problem if you already have liver or kidney problems. It is also a problem in cosmetics in areas of low humidity less than 65% because of the potential to remove water from your skin. This is not what you want in a moisturiser. A clinical review published in the American Academy of Dermatologists journal of January 1991, shows propylene glycol to cause a significant number of skin reactions and it is named as a primary irritant to the skin even in low levels of concentration. It can be dangerous to children in large oral dosage (79g/Kg) because it behaves like a general anesthetic causing seizures and changes in the surface EEG. Although cosmetics are not intended for oral use, this effect has caused problems because 1. children eat them 2. propylene glycol is often one of the largest ingredients by volume.23

Mineral Oil aka petrolatum, paraffin

Mineral Oil forms an occlusive barrier on the skin, effectively preventing the skin from breathing and function normally. This barrier can inhibit the skins’ own NMF (Natural Moisturising Factor), which may lead to excessive dryness and/or fluid retention. Many years ago, mineral oils were the preferred base oils of aromatherapists, as they were considered non-toxic, cheap and easily able to pick up the smell of essential oils. They are still widely used in ‘baby oils’ and moisturising creams. Despite the name, mineral oils are manufactured from crude petrol. According to the International Agency for Research into Cancer in Geneva, they are probably carcinogenic as ‘analyses of mineral oils used for medicinal and cosmetic purposes reveal the presence of several carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which are in the Eighth Report on Carcinogens, including benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, and benzo[a]pyrene.’9 They’re noted as a human teratogen by inhalation which has caused testicular tumours in the foetus. They are also skin and eye irritants and may be implicated in aspirational pneumonia.6

Parabens

The most frequently used chemicals in cosmetics aside from water. They are used as preservatives and antibacterials. Because of their frequent use as preservatives for other ingredients, such as surfactants, they are not listed on all labels that contain them. Unless ingredients are labelled UP, they are probably preserved with parabens. There are 4 main paraben types which are methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl paraben. They were considered innocuous until quite recently. Research in the UK 21 at Brunel University established that the oestrogen mimicing effect of parabens (known since 1938) could be responsible for upsetting the oestrogen balance in animals including humans. Upsetting the oestrogen balance is considered to have significant effects including lowered sperm counts, breast cancer, osteoporosis, and autoimmune disease. The response to this study from the cosmetic industry association in Europe, (COLIPA) was that the findings were irrelevant as they believed that parabens didn’t penetrate the skin. There is no scientific validity to this claim. Skin penetration is affected by many factors such as heat, hydration, occlusion and chemical synergies.

Parabens are also noted as a cause of allergic dermatitis. Methylparaben has been noted as a suspected mutagen. It is also moderately toxic by ingestion. Parabens are also suspected allergens.6 The Brunel University group published this statement as part of their research findings: “Given their use in a wide range of commercially available topical preparations, it is suggested that the safety in use of these chemicals should be reassessed, with particular attention being paid to estimation of the actual levels of systemic exposure of humans exposed to these chemicals. The acquisition of such data is a prerequisite to the derivation of reliable estimates of the possible human risk of exposure to parabens.”

Lanolin

Used in all types of cosmetics. Lanolin is a natural wax coating on sheep wool and is removed by boiling the wool and collecting the wax. It has long been noted as an allergen, and it is now also adulterated with chemical pesticides and fertilisers. Note: sheep are dipped in pesticides and eat grass grown with fertilisers. The result is contamination with a multitude of dangerous organophosphates and other carcinogens and neurotoxins. Diazinon was found in 84% of samples taken in a test sampling that included dieldrin and DDT and over a dozen other pesticides.15 Diazinon is a neurotoxic contact poison which easily penetrates the skin barrier. As a consequence of the widespread contamination, lanolin shouldn’t be used unless it is purified and cosmetics with lanolin should be avoided unless the label states that the lanolin is purified. Especially do not use lanolin on cracked nipples of nursing mothers. The toxins will transmit straight to the baby.

Artificial Fragrance

Fragrance on a product label could mean anything but it is usually synthetic as essential oils are listed for marketing points. Unless an essential oil is specified, it’s odds on to be synthetic. If essential oils are specified, it’s likely they are very cheap commercial grades. For instance, most commercial bergamot oil has 5% real bergamot and 95% synthetic limonenes. Consider that next time you buy a cheap bergamot. Many fragrances both synthetic and natural can have a cumulative effect that can cause skin problems. In addition, synthetic fragrances often contain hundreds of ingredients including carcinogens such as methyl chloride. Because fragrance manufacturers do not have to disclose the ingredients in fragrances, or test for toxic synergies, there is no way of knowing whether they are safe or not.

Colours

Many of these colours are made from coal tars or are aluminium lakes, and it’s very doubtful if any of them are safe. All coal tars colours have been found to be carcinogenic in varying degrees. They’ve also been found to cause nausea, mood swings, headaches and fatigue. Dyes derived from precipitating soluble colours with aluminum and other chemicals, are termed ‘lakes’ and can be neurotoxic. Both lakes and coal tar dyes can be stored in our organs and fatty tissues. Although the toxicity of oral ingestion of colours in lipstick has been widely reported, research at the University of Pittsburg indicates that up to twice as much toxic material can be absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin as opposed to the oral route. So colours can be a problem area with shampoos, eye colouring, mascara and nail varnishes.

Colouring agents are becoming very controversial in all western countries, principally through the US public environmental watchdog groups (notably Ralph Nader’s) who fund private court actions against the use of known carcinogens and neurotoxins. These actions have seen colours regularly de-listed because of their toxicity. Unfortunately, government agencies, primarily the FDA (The Food and Drug Agency) in the USA, are the ones fighting the de-listings. Colours are allowed even though they are toxic because of a 1938 amendment to the pure Foods Act of 1901 which specifically excludes them from scrutiny. This is why they are still legal and why consumer groups have to privately go to court to prevent their use on a colour by colour basis. Note: There are ‘so called natural’ companies selling lipsticks with what they claim are annatto colours. When confronted with the fact that annatto colours are water soluble and not suitable for lipstick, these companies admit that they are precipitated with aluminium to form the neurotoxic lake’ colours’ referred to above.

Iodine: Miracle Mineral

Posted by myhealthexperts on January 13, 2008

 Iodine: Pass (on)the Salt Please!

Dr. Majid Ali, who hosts Science,. Health and Healing radio show every Monday and Tuesday on www.WBAI.org is literally a classroom on the air. Dr. Ali is the first doctor I recommend when clients ask me for such: www.MajidAli.com

Here are my Iodine Crib Notes: (from one of his shows):

Iodine acts as an:

-Anti-inflammatory (the newest theory with allot of scientific evidence on most disease states is that inflammation is the KEY!)
-anti-oxidant
-Detoxifying agent (pulls out toxic mercury, chlorine, bromide and fluoride)
-Reduces carcinogenic effects of chlorine (found in water and swimming pools)
-Anti-diabetic (via Thyroid Function)
– Immune system enhancer via Immune Cell formation and it helps form cytokines (agents that are involved in inflammation/immune response)

Back in 1894 (before big pharmaceutical companies controlled medicine) an article was published in the journal Lancet showing that iodine was useful to treat breast cancer.

Dr. Brownstein specializes in thyroid issues (energy, weight loss or gain) and tests his patients and found that over 95% of them were deficient in iodine. Many of his patients have seen 3,4 or more specialists (endocrinologists) who cannot figure out their health issues, specifically the thyroid. His research has yielded a totally different approach than most doctors use to test and treat the thyroid.

He mentions that the USRDA is totally erroneous for health, it only is the amount to prevent disease (here iodine deficiency will lead to goiter). He states that he had been taught in Medical School that there is enough iodine in salt to keep us healthy, and that supplementing with iodine is dangerous. He has discovered in his research that this is totally wrong, that there is no science to support this, and that treating patients with 100’s of times the USRDA (mg levels versus micro gram levels), mostly because most are deficient and the toxicity of our modern environment has made iodine needs increase, not decrease. Most adults need between 6-15 mg per day. That dose is many more times the RDA!!

And they find it works amazingly well. We need the 2 forms – iodine and iodide (iodine is the element and has 1 extra electron). Thyroid binds iodide, breast tissue bind to iodine. Lugol solution has both and they recommend this.

Iodine is an element in a family of elements called Halogens. Other halogens are bromide, chloride, and fluoride. Iodine is the only one we need, the others are toxic to us. Yet often our bodies are full of them since we get bromide from food(it’s added to baked goods), fluoride from toothpaste and water, and chloride from water as well. These agents replace iodine in our cells, making our bodies even more toxic, and depleted in this element. Dr. Bernstein has found that when he gives his patients 50 mg a day of iodine and tests before and after – he finds most ALL his patients are excreting in the urine toxic amounts of bromide and fluoride. Breast cancer patients have TWICE as much bromide than the rest of the people he tests.

He goes on to say that Table Salt does NOT give enough iodide, since chlorine and ferrous cyanide are used to bleach the salt, often binding the iodide and making it useless – in fact only 10% of iodide in salt is even bioavailable, but these agents reduce that amount even more. Therefore he recommends patients supplement with iodine. (again, a mix of iodine and iodide is best)

Bottom Line: If this interests you, let me know and I can point you to doctors who can work on this with you. After hearing this show, I am going to buy an Iodine Supplement (Lugol Solution), one with iodide and iodine, and for 90 days take 50 mg. per day. This; according to these doctors, is safe and non-toxic. From what I heard, if I get flu like symptoms, (a sign the iodine is pulling out allot of toxins like bromide) – I will back off the dose. Best thing is to get an ‘iodine challenge’ to measure levels of iodine in the body. Then you can see how much you need. But in general all of us need more iodine. Also – reduce exposure to toxic fluoride (toothpaste), chloride (tap water) and bromide (baked goods like breads). This is a big step too!
