Count Your Pennies While The Bankers Count Their Billions!

With everyone being concerned over the economy – people are starting to find ways to save money. One way people are turning to more and more is being healthy. Sounds crazy but its true – vitamin sales are up sharply this year as people find prevention saves more money in the long run than expensive doctor’s visits and drugs. Plus it just feels better!

Health care (insurance) is a twisted system – it’s like an all you can eat buffet – it tends to incentivize sloth and gluttony! Plus it may not be there for you when you need it – in case you didn’t hear – the financial cancer has metastasized! So why not invest in the best asset you have: yourself?

Now more than ever is a great time to step up to your health and fitness to the next level. It often takes a crisis for people to wake up! Unfortunately it’s often too late.

Here are some easy ways to save money and get fit and healthy:
1) Save $500/month – Quit your gym:
Gyms can be expensive. And the truth is you don’t need all that equipment. I have clients who are now saving over $500/month by training at my home gym. Do the math:

Option A: Gym membership: $150/month
Personal training sessions: 3/week= 12/month at $95 = $1140
TOTAL: $1290

Option B: 12 PT sessions with in home personal trainer: $65 x 12 = $780
(They do cardio as I show them on their off days outside in the fresh air)

Total Savings: $510/month – or $6120 a year!

Note: Even at 2 sessions per week you still save $400/month or $4800/yr.

Even if you cannot afford personal training there are many other ways to exercise that do not require a gym.

2) Save $200/month – Stop Eating So Much:
While billions of people don’t have enough to eat, most in the US have too much to eat. Many of the poor in the world die from malnutrition while many here die from eating too much toxic food that comprises the typical American diet.

Fasting is a great way to lose weight and save money – skipping one meal a day could reduce your food bill by 33%. I’ve discussed it before, the easiest type of fast is IF (Intermittent Fasting) where you simply skip a meal – like breakfast. Try to get at least 12-16 hrs of fasting to reap the benefits.

3) $500+/month –Stop Getting Sick!
Actually this one is priceless – after all, how much is your health worth to you? Start by eating healthy with judicious use of nutritional supplements. I used to get sick 2-3 times a year, a cold, the flu and then allergies in the spring.

When I cut out the top allergens from my diet and began to aggressively take safe, non-toxic nutrients my life completely changed. A 100% turnaround. I stopped feeling congested; I didn’t get sick for over 12 years. In fact, even now when I do catch something, I can feel it ‘coming on’ for a few hours and then it goes away. I think I was actually sick, where I was stuffed up and congested – once in the last 4 yrs, mostly due, I think, because I began to eat dairy and wheat again.

The NY Times recently ran an article that people are buying vitamins and herbs more this year to try and avoid doctor and drug expenses. People know being healthy is the way to go – it’s just when they have enough money – they feel they can afford to be lazy. You have to love human nature!

Bottom line: If you want to be healthier and fit you need to exercise. You don’t need the gym. You need to eat healthy (50-75% raw, 50-75% organic). You don’t need to starve. However, if you aren’t eating like this – my research indicates you can compensate for this by adding liberal use of nutritional supplements.

A common phrase I often hear from my clients when asked about their health is ‘everything in moderation.’ But what exactly defines moderation? How do we know that our moderation is really balanced? Are there hidden factors we are unaware of that skew our idea of moderation? Is moderate exposure to toxins a safe and healthy choice?

In this era of increasing health risks such as cancer, infertility, emotional issues like depression and anxiety, and the epidemic of childhood issues like ADD/ADHD and autism – can we afford to wait until after the fact to realize we did not do our best to prepare ourselves and our family?

Not only does green tea help reduce the risk of breast cancer according to another new study, it can even help people to lose stubborn belly fat!

Researchers randomized 132 overweight or obese adults to receive a beverage containing approximately 625 milligrams green tea catechins (including gallocatechin, epigallocatechin, catechin, epicatechin, EGCG, gallocatechin gallate, epicatechin gallate and catechin gallate) and 39 milligrams caffeine, or a beverage containing the same amount of caffeine without catechins daily for twelve weeks. Participants were requested to maintain the same amount of caloric intake and to engage in at least 180 minutes per week of exercise, including at least three supervised sessions each week. Body composition, serum lipids, and other factors were assessed at the beginning and end of the study.

Both groups lost weight by the end of the study, yet participants who received catechins experienced a greater amount of weight loss than those who consumed the control beverage. When fat mass was considered, the percentage lost was greater in the catechin group, although the amount was not considered significant. However, total abdominal fat area, subcutaneous abdominal fat and serum triglycerides were significantly lower in subjects who received green tea catechins.

As my clients know, I have been big on green tea for a long time (organic is better to avoid risk of fluoride exposure). I had a tea party for my clients once to honor the Zen tradition of the tea ceremony. In essence, you are just making serving tea a ritual, a meditation – another way to be present and relax. So here is yet another reason to drink several cups of green tea daily!

Say A Prayer: The Power Of One

christA lot of my clients have a hard time falling asleep. Or they all too often wake up, wrought with thoughts – never able to fully let go of the day and sink fully into the a deep, dark night of sleep. Who ever said black (the darkness) was evil? I love a good sleep! I suppose if we were nocturnal creatures we’d say the light (the sun) was evil.

What helps me fall asleep is to pray. Not because I’m religious, but because it works. I once wrote a poem:
I don’t believe in God, but I feel comfort when I pray.
I don’t believe in time, but I watch it take each day.
I don’t believe in love, but it moves my heart to cry
I don’t believe the answers, yes still I question, why?
“*

The truth is next to simply doing slow breathing, nothing helps me to focus and let go better at night than a prayer. Now prayer is just a religious word for meditation. Doing one thing – from focusing on the breath, to saying the Rosary, can work wonders for the mind bogged down in stress, anxiety and depression.

As a child I was wired by family and church to pray – a lot. So my neurons strongly associate prayer with a comforting feeling. Prayer is after all, a focus of the mind. The mind focused on one thing is a powerful tool. This is why we all seek the One in most everything we do – think about it – gardening, fishing, sports, washing the dishes; you name it – when we are present and doing the ‘one’ we are more at peace then when our minds are racing around with endless ‘to do’ lists.

I often tell clients who ask me in troubled times – do one thing right now that can make you feel better. Sometimes instead of doing one thing trying to solve the problem – the best thing we can do is nothing. Yes, even better than 1, is 0 (zero) – do nothing and watch the problem dissolve. Why solve when you can dissolve! Look at how soft and yielding water is – yet it dissolved the rock to form the Grand Canyon!

There may be more reasons these days than insomnia to pray. Obama was inaugurated today. Many hope that he is the one to help us rise up to meet the challenge ahead. The economy is about to fall of the cliff. Bernie Madoff made off with countless billions of false prophets (oops I mean profits). He is the poster boy for the profit party of 2008. No we all have to suffer the hangover!

As a NY Times financial reporter noted, Bernie was really no different than what most other prophets on Wall street were doing. As he said, Madoff just cut out the middleman!

The year ahead will be extremely challenging, more than you may imagine. We need new tools to help us change and cope. Meditation (prayer in effect) is one such tool. It has changed my life. I realize that when I am alone in the dark woods at night, the words that break the silence are some of the strongest prayers possible.

The Power of One: one prayer, one leader, one moment, one person (you) being at one with all of creation. Pray long and hard for that!

“Ask why diabetes is epidemic in the 21st century and most people will point the finger at bad diet, laziness and obesity. According to a small but growing group of scientists, though, the real culprit is a family of toxic chemicals known as persistent organic pollutants, or POPs. If these researchers are right, POPs – which include some of the most reviled chemicals ever created, including dioxins, DDT and PCBs – may be key players in the web of events that lead people to develop the disease. “ (NewScientist.com 09/15/08)

Diabetes is right there with obesity. And of course in the holistic model we acknowledge that everything is connected – so if POPs can facilitate obesity and diabetes, these in turn can lead to hormone dysfunction, which can effect brain chemistry, leading to emotional problems like depression, anxiety, etc.

Detox is going to be a key focus of mine in 2009 since its become clear its a critical but often overlooked factor in our lives. Once again, more greens and enzyme rich unheated foods are key. Also consider a properly designed detox program. I have a real toxicologist, Eunice Stagliola, PhD, working on creating one for us right now. Stay tuned!

Red Meat: Good or Bad?

Does red meat deserve its bad name?

There have been numerous studies strongly linking the daily/frequent consumption of red meat to esophageal cancer, colorectal cancer and though tenuously, breast cancer in women in addition to health issues such as Alzheimer’s, Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. When you actually look at the reasons why red meat is bad, most of them can be sidestepped and we can still all enjoy our slabs of beef now and then without the guilt.
1. Eat Grass Fed Only:
a) Conventional cattle are fed dead animals and chicken feces in a process called rendering. This is how BSE (‘Mad Cow Disease’) is spread and how meat can infect humans with the BSE prion. This alone would turn most people off eating regular meat. Rendering is still practiced in the US on a large scale and some critics have pointed out the increasing number of Alzheimers disease as misdiagnosed mad cow disease.
b) Commercially bred cattle are also fed grain, so they usually have a higher ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-6s are the unhealthy kind and high levels have been linked to cardiovascular issues. You could sidestep this by eating grass fed beef that has been found to contain a higher amount of healthy nutrients like zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamins B-6 and B-12. You could also go for the leaner cuts of meat and reduce the fat consumed per piece of meat.
2. Eat Smaller Portions:
a) New data suggests that we only need about 20 grams of protein to stimulate muscle growth. This means we can eat smaller portions of meat which are less costly.
b) More importantly, red meat also contains a high amount of iron in a form that is more readily absorbed by the body compared to iron you would get in spinach which will only get absorbed if your body needs it. Iron, as much as we need it, is not healthy at high levels, especially for men. It accelerates membrane damage by free radicals (reactive oxygen species) as well as damage to other large molecules in the cell like DNA, RNA and proteins. DNA damage will increase the risk of getting cancer. High iron levels in the gut decrease the absorption of calcium. While your body can buffer against calcium deficiencies to a point, I could spend all day telling you what terrible things could happen if calcium levels were too low for an extended period of time. You could consider eating red meat as a treat and not as a staple. That way, your body only has to deal with sporadic increases in iron. For those that have a deficiency in iron, this may not be a major problem.
3. Eat It Rare:
a) Cooking beef at high temperatures – grilling, broiling, high temperature pan frying etc can results in formation of known carcinogens such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heterocyclic amines (HCAs). You could cook at slower temperatures, and if you must add oil to a steak, try the healthy oils like coconut that are more stable when heated.
b) Buying grass fed beef and cooking on low temperature keeps the proteins in a more natural state and may enhance bioavailability. So once again, better utilization of the food – we get the benefits with smaller portions (and less calories!).

Whole Foods and Tommy K’s in Stamford, Ct sell grass fed beef, and of the two, I prefer Tommy K’s meat selection. Rob, the owner of Tommy K, actually met with the farmers that raise the cattle!

Why I Believe in Santa Claus (And Why You Should Too!)

After watching Dennis Leary’s “Merry F#@&* Christmas” Special I realized that I am not the only one burned out on the ‘season to be jolly’. There is a lot to be turned off by; the crowds, the gross and flagrant consumerism, the stress over the whole gift thing. Its a time when people are literally trampling over others in their attempts to get the next best deal. It’s not just the high and mighty on Wall Street who are trampling over their fellow man. Shoppers at Wal Mart trampled a man to death in a buying frenzy. I’m sure most of us have experienced the insanity – from the parking lot jostling to the long check out lines. From buying madness to Bernie Madoff the world often seems to spin out of control.

Then you have the secular issues, from scholars that deconstruct the myth of Jesus, to others who claim the overdone Christmas holiday undermines the celebration of their religious holiday. And with the economy heading further and further south, its hard for anyone, let alone an anarchistic atheist like myself to have Christmas Spirit. Until I was saved by Santa!

Sure, Santa, like Jesus (God) are conformity enforcers, “He knows if you’ve been bad or good…” where kids get presents for being good and adults get heaven. But lets not throw the baby out with the bath water, Santa, like Jesus, offers the open mind an invaluable insight on life that most never get.

So this is how I found my way back to believing in Santa:

Reason #1: Faith In Santa:
Forget about Jesus, lets look at an even more difficult guy to believe in: Santa Claus. Every adult knows Santa does not exist. And yet Santa Claus has in some small way made parents all over the world more compassionate and generous with their children. Even the gift giving among adults is in some way nurtured by the story of Santa.

Think about it – Santa is the symbol of compassionate giving. A man who flies around the entire world giving children gifts as a reward for them being good. In our hearts all humans yearn to be good, to do whats right, to act Noble. Children in particular want to be good, since often they have not yet been scarred by traumatic events that can twist their developing psyches. And Santa adds a measure of accountability to their self-awareness of being good. Children, like adults, often do better when they feel they are held accountable.

Santa does not just give his children gifts, he gives all children gifts. He is a compassionate giver – with no prejudice. He has an open heart, and his love flows freely. This is the real symbolism of Santa that everyone seems to forget. But the hope and possibility for all of us to wake up and realize the hidden power in these stories is given to us year after year.

I have faith in the Power Of Santa and his open heart. This is one reason why I believe in Santa.

Reason #2: ‘Santa’ Does Exist- Really!

The story of Santa is real, no matter whether a real man called Santa (or Kris Kringle) ever existed. And the story of Santa, we can all agree, is what we call an idea or “information”.

If the idea of Santa does exist, that’s as good as him really existing. Think about it for a second – all reality is what we call information. You are made of genes, units of biological information. Our brains and computers share and store information as well – ideas, facts, theories, etc. This entire world manifests from the ‘formless’ to ‘in form’ – hence the word information. Good ideas, like good genes, tend to get spread around. Santa, like God, seems to have been a good idea. Hence their popularity.

We store good ideas, facts, memories, stories, etc – in our minds. All reality is a story my mind creates for me. So Santa, like Jesus, and Einstein, all exist only in my mind. I never met Martin Luther King but he and his speech (“I have a dream…”) live in my mind and still continue to inspire me today. So Santa, like Einstein, does exist, where everything else exists – in our minds.

In Mel Gibsons “The Passion of the Christ” Jesus said “I am the Word” meaning of course, that it is the words (information) that are what matters, not the flesh.

Reason #3: Reality Is An Illusion We All Agree To:
After all, what is reality anyway? Nothin’ but a collective hunch” Lily Tomlin

My friend Howard Bloom devotes an entire chapter of his book, ‘Global Brain’ to explaining in detail that reality is a shared hallucination. Whats the difference between the information of Santa and his story, and Einstein and his story? My choice of whether I believe in them. And my choice is deterimed in large part by the collective choice of society. My reality tells me to say ‘No’ to Santa and ‘Yes’ to Einstein. But they are all information. The only thing separating good (yes) information from bad (no) information is how our minds choose to process them.

Information always comes from one place: energy. Energy is still a mystery to science. But its the fabric of reality – a reality that all great teachers from Jesus to Buddha to Einstein have said is an illusion. For example, when you touch someone, the energy from the atoms of their skin triggers energy in your body to travel up to your brain where you perceive touch. Its all just energy acting in both positive (attractive) and negative (repulsive) ways.

If I saw the “real” Santa, energy in the form of photons would hit my eye and send energy to my brain where the software program in the brain (a horribly outdated program I might add. You think Microsoft sucks?) would translate the information to me: “Flying Fat man on Sleigh, Red Outfit, White Beard – must be Santa Claus.” I then believe the story of Santa.

If I read a book on Santa, the photons send me the same message as above. If I am told the story of Santa by someone else – the energy in the sound waves hit my ears where a pulse of energy from my eardrum goes to my brain and once again, my software translates the information to me.

In the end its all information and if the information inspires us we act from it. From Santa and Jesus, to Einstein and MLK, it’s the information of each of these that inspires me to act. And after all, all information ends in it’s ability to inspire where you begin. Ultimately the choice to act from information is a personal one.

And I choose to act from the inspiration of Santa. Christmas is one of a million reminders to me that I can wake up to the real story of Santa and Jesus, and act from that awareness.

How To Get Your Kid Into Harvard (or Yale)!

My graduate thesis at New York Medical College was on “Nutrition and Brain Function in Children” so I learned a few things about optimizing brain function. And of course when our brains are working, everything else works too. We are after all – controlled by our brains.

In the wealthy suburbs parents send their kids to pre-schools that cost upwards of $30,000/year. This is the supposed track to getting them into the best schools and careers possible. But do the best intentioned parents often miss the boat? I’ve got some amazing discoveries to share that you’ve probably never heard anywhere before! But first:

1.) Is This a Healthy Goal?

In a society where its increasingly obvious that the norm is unhealthy on all levels, we need to look deeper into what society has us all chasing. Perhaps here we need to ask “whats so special about Harvard (or any other school)?” Look at so called ‘health care’: the best doctors, from Harvard and Yale, are blind lackies for the Medical-Pharmaceutical Industrial Complex, using modalities designed to make massive profits, not keep people healthy. Chemotherapy for example has a long term success rate of only 2.1%. How smart is managing disease instead of promoting health?

Look at Wall Street: the best minds from Harvard and Yale (speaking symbolically here of course) were great at making themselves massive profits, but as we’re just starting to see, bringing our great nation to its knees. How ‘smart’ is blind greed?

Bloomberg News had a recent article reviewing the careers of the great financial experts who have been called in to save the economy – and it concluded they were the same ones who helped create the current disaster. It went on to state that they should instead be given subpoenas for financial fraud!

The current system does not give our children any wisdom. And in a world where the air is thick with smog, the land and water contaminated with toxins, and we’re in a global depression on top of global warming, wisdom may be more valuable than a Harvard MBA.

2.) Lets instead make our children the best possible human beings they can be:

A better, more wholistic goal then would be to help our children simply be the best they can be. If they go to Harvard, great. If not, thats great too. There is a new paradigm emerging, and your kids will live it more than you can ever imagine. It will be forced on them just as ‘the sins of the father shall be visited upon the sons’.

By realizing the winds of change you will better guide your children through the cultural shifts already starting to happen. One of community over individualism, happiness over ambition and greed, and health over fast food, fast cars and fast cures (drugs). Lead by example.

3) Stop Being So Selfish:

‘Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself’ Kahil Gilbran.

Its not about you and your kid is not your ‘mini-me’. Having children is a selfish act, but parenting is an opportunity to practice selflessness. Yet so many ‘driven’ parents are driving their kids mad trying to make them into something they weren’t. Trying to compete with other parents or having your child compete with other kids increases the liklihood of programming an undertone of unhappiness into every facet of your childs life.

4) Take Care of Your Childs Basics:

Basic means primal – what we are designed by evolution to eat. And how we are basically designed to move in this world (aka exercise). Children need whole foods and daily exercise. Giving your kids the ‘video valium’ by putting them in front of a video game or TV does them no good. They need to be moving around, developing strong bodies and neural networks through play. Yes play has a vital evolutionary role, it programs the individual for life.

Whole foods means as close to natural as possible. This does not mean foods like cereal, milk, cheeze wiz, and juice. These are a great way to ruin your childs sensitive brain chemistry. Don’t blame them the next time they throw a fit – blame the food you are feeding them. If you need to give your child milk – at least make it raw milk, or better – hemp or almond milk.

One parent who I know has an adorable son with a learning disability. Nothing major but noticable. I repeatedly told her about looking into the basics first – food allergies, adverse reactions to vaccines, etc. Simple things that a qualified (few are) doctor could test for and clear up for her son. In fact there is a great book on the Four A’s that I advise any parent of a child with allergies or behavioral and/or learning issues read.

She still has yet to read it or do anything out of her comfort zone to help her son. Yet she feeds him cookies and candy – this is normal after all. To me this is stealing the childs future right out from underneath him. Something as simple as the nutrient alpha-lipoic-acid has been used to assist heavy metal detox for kids, and yet she would have no idea what this even means.

    For most kids, the following basics apply:

-Cut out sugar, white flour and soda
-Dilute juice with water – lots of water
-Kids need lots of healthy fats – avocado, flax, coconut milk/oil, nuts, seeds, hemp, soft egg yolks.
-Get them on a good multi-vitamin & DHA (fatty acid) supplement
-Try to eliminate the main food allergens: Wheat, Soy, Dairy, Corn, and Peanuts. This is especially critical if your child has allergies, asthma, and/or behavioral or learning challenges.

My graduate thesis showed that children who had higher test scores tended to eat better, exercise, took a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement and had more active and engaged adult caretakers. Which leads me to point 5.

5) Take Care of Your Basics:

Eat right and exercise! No parent is as patient and loving when they are wired on sugar and caffeine as when they are healthy and fit. Every aspect of your life flows better when you honor the life and body you inherit for these few short decades.

Despite that voice inside telling you to not eat healthy and exercise daily we all know, logically at least, that health and fitness are investments in ourselves that pay back huge dividends. Even more so for our children, and in more ways than one! After all, you might just live long enough to see your grandchildren get into Harvard!

Drug Company Found Intimidating Researchers

One of many examples of the hidden side of drug companies:

“A Maryland doctor said she felt “threatened and disappointed” after GlaxoSmithKline P.L.C. urged her to stop discussing her concerns that the company’s diabetes drug, Avandia, caused heart problems.

Her assertion marks the second time that GlaxoSmithKline has been accused of trying to intimidate a researcher who pointed out problems with Avandia, which before its side effects became well-known was the top-selling diabetes drug.

In 2007, University of North Carolina researcher John Buse testified before Congress that GlaxoSmithKline had called him a liar and suggested it might sue him if his comments about Avandia’s potential safety problems caused the company’s stock to drop.”

And the recent debacle of the FDA’s stance on Bisphenol A (BPA) where it was found to have used the opinion of the Chemical Industry only serves the point that Industry and Government are often dangerously slow to act.

One simple thing you can do is to to eat the most heavily contaminated foods in their organic version only! Here is the list of foods to buy Organic, and in bold are the more popular foods I prefer.

Natural Solutions for Stress & Anxiety

stress-man1Times are tough and people are more stressed and anxious than ever. Stress and anger are literally toxic to the body. Anxiety and depression literally depress immune function. One of my clients told me she was now taking Xanax for anxiety. These meds are not only powerful but addictive. So I feel its best to use them as a last resort. There are many natural ways to reduce stress and anxiety – exercise, meditation and good sleep notwithstanding. When you feel anxiety use that as a key to remind you to practice the breathing technique I’ve shown all of you. Make the connection “Stress- Breathing” or ‘Anxiety-Breathing’ as a 1-2 combo to be done when these feelings arise.

People have many ways of dealing with stress and anxiety. Some think the only way to get stress relief and reduce anxiety is to drink alcohol, smoke pot, or take other drugs like ecstacy or mushrooms. These substances are often not only illegal (pot and ecstacy are illegal drugs for example), they are also dangerous. Alcohol for example is involved in many car accidents, it is a toxin to both the brain and liver, and as a sugar can lead to obesity and diabetes. Therefore alcohol and/or other illegal drugs like pot and ecstacy are poor choices. Another way to deal with stress is with prescription medications. Xanax and Valium are among the most popular. Other drugs often prescribed are Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac, Effexor and Welbutrin. Prescription drugs are the most popular treatment options in use today for anxiety. Indeed the abuse of these drugs has become an epidemic, for example, Vicodin for pain is often used for other psychological issues like stress and anxiety or to just get high. Because so many people use it to get high, it is now a controlled substance, strictly controlled and monitored by the governemnt. While these legal drugs are some of the most popular ways people deal with stress and anxiety, they often have side effects. Our bodies are not evolved to process drugs so often they disrupt delicate brain chemistry and other body functions.

Natural products like amino acids are a much safer choice for stress relief and to reduce anxiety. Amino acids are the building blocks or proteins. Proteins are found in many foods like meat, eggs and fish. As such our bodies are naturally equipped to process amino acids so they are safe and better for us. They best part is that when certain amino acids are taken alone or without food, they can often have powerful effects on us. Food in general affects our mood, and everyone has felt how chocolate makes us feel good. Chocolate has amino acids and chocolate is well known to improve mood and stimulate sexual interest – so it is called an aphrodisiac. Even just eating when we are hungry makes us feel better. So we see that food has a powerful effect on how we feel. And amino acids are an important part of why food makes us feel better.

When used alone or in certain combinations, amino acids can get into the brain easier and help restore normal brain chemistry. For example, Phenyl-GABA has been studied and shown to improve the way another amino acid called GABA, works in our brain. GABA, or Gamma Amino Butyric Acid, is an amino acid found in food, but also a brain chemical called a neurotransmiter. Neurotransmitters are chemicals like amino acids that help brain cells (called neurons) communicate with each other. They are the building blocks of our moods and emotions. Too much dopamine and we feel motivated and excited. Too little serotonin and we feel depressed.

L-theanine is another amino acid found in green tea that can reduce stress. The african herb Kanna has been used for centuries to treat depression by elevating serotonin. These items work so well I use them exclusively in my stress and anxiety product Gabatrol.

Eat Food, Not Too Much, Mostly Plants

Here is a question one of my readers recently asked me:
Q: I’m a 37 year old male. I suffer from erectile dysfunction, memory loss and depression. I’m looking for supplements to address my deficiencies. I think I have a manganese deficiency. What do you recommend?

A: I’m all for your desire to treat yourself. But thinking that a specific nutrient is the key is the wrong approach. Thats taking the conventional medicine way but instead of treating symptoms with drugs youre using nutritients. If you do want to ascertain what if any deficiencies you have, you must seek a qualified health professional (not your typical doctor) who can assess your nutrient status via blood, hair and other testing procedures.

For yours, and anyone else’s issues that are not life threatening or signs of more serious disease, you can always start some lifestyle changes yourself in addition to seeking professional care. If going solo, its best to start with the basics. A healthy diet, exercise and some form of mindfulness training are the foundation of your health and life.

Mindfulness training goes by many names; call it what you want, spirituality, religion, meditation, cognitive therapy, personal growth etc. Its a process by which the undisciplined, emotional, ego-centered voice in our head we commonly think of as ‘self’ starts to lose control to a more disciplined, balanced, rational, awakened self free of the dark energy and negative thoughts our common self lives on.

You diet must be more aligned with your evolutionary design. The recent advent of processed food, genetically modified foods, and even cooking have all ravaged the nutrient profile in modern human diets, leaving us vulnerable to a plethora of dysfunction. Combined with the modern environment full of increased toxins, increased information overload and chronic stressors from many sources and you have a recipe for disaster. So its probable that most of us will develop some type of disease and/or health concerns.

How did our ancestors eat? Usually whatever they could pick or kill from their local environment. They picked fruit, nuts, greens, and roots, and killed local game like rabbits, seals, deer, and bison. This ‘pick/kill’ diet varied all over the globe. As omnivores, humans are remarkably capable of adapting to all sorts of diets. People have thrived on high fat, low carb diets to low fat, high carbs. The macronutrients are not the key – its the fact that all these foods were raw and fresh. From whale blubber to Yucca these foods were eaten with their nutrient contents intact.

I’m not saying any cooked food is bad. Certain nutrients are made available from heating. But in general nutrients are sensitive to degradation from 4 sources: heat, light, oxygen and time. It’s not easy making the shift to more raw foods, unless you have your mind on your side. Thats another reason to make regular practice of awakening a daily ritual. If you do need to cook, use lower temperatures as this is less destructive than high temperatures.

In general – a diet rich in greens, moderate in everything else is best. Moderate grains, fruits, raw nuts and seeds, and meats. Reduce dairy, and whatever dairy you consume should be raw – not pasteurized or homogenized. Eat organic where possible, especially animal products where toxins accumulate in higher amounts. Grass fed beef, wild salmon, organic eggs are great sources of protein. I eat my eggs raw, and my beef and salmon pan seared on the outside and raw inside. Avoid wheat, eat brown rice, millet, spelt, or sprouted grain products instead.

When I first started eating raw eggs and beef, I gagged several times. It was simply a mind game I realized and quickly eliminated that silly fear. The key is to take small steps, make changes in comfortable ways that do not stress you out. For example, getting off milk – do it in stages. Go from whole milk to 2%, then 1% then mix almond milk with 1% milk at 50-50 ratio, then shift to pure almond milk. Its easy that way.

To offset modernity and its associated toxins – the use of broad spectrum nutritional products is warranted. Think of nutrition as music – the more varied the instruments are the better. Together the symphony sounds more complete. This variety of instruments is identical to nutrition – take in a variety and in general never go for one single instrument (nutrient), unless directed by as health professional. With that said let me contradict myself and give you the other side: there is good science to support the use of certain nutrients that most people are short on.

Magnesium for example is one. Most people get far too much calcium and too little magnesium. And multi-vitamins are short on it as well, so some extra magnesium is a good idea. And of course a high quality multi-vitamin.

One more thing – try to decrease caffeine, sugar and bad fats found in processed/fried foods. These items are toxic to varying degrees. Drink green tea instead of coffee.

Start with these basics and give it three to six months. See if your conditions improve. In the short term, you can take a natural PDE-5 inhibitor like the herbs cnidium and a nitric oxide agent like L-Arginine for the impotence. St. Johns Wort or L-Theanine could work for the depression, and the memory loss may be more complex than this article can go into.

How does one make these changes? Mindset – you need to have a warrior mind. Call it what you want, only a focused, clear and disciplined mind will rise above the odds. Work on your mind and the rest will follow.

Clinton or Obama? How Politics Affects Your Health!

In order to understand and see what a really healthy and whole life is, you need to take a “systems approach”.  It will not work as well using the typical scientific reductionistic method of compartmentalizing the individual threads that together make the vast web called your life.  Just look at modern health care for one of many examples of how the science reductionism (the best process we have to understand the world vs. say religion) has fallen short.

This is, after all, YOUR world. Not mine, or the Presidents, yours. We are all a cast of characters inside this enormous video game you found yourself in called “Life”.  And its your game (“please insert another quarter to continue playing“).  So the more pieces of the puzzle you connect, the more threads in the web of your life you weave together, the better you will be in the game of life.

My clients know I can be very political. My party is the Truth Party and it has very few members. I even lost one client over my political discourse. I am not for or against any party, I am simply for the Truth. But that is a very difficult and uncomfortable position to have in this modern world. Because not only does absolute power corrupt absolutely**, but corruption involves lies, deceit and a host of other things that all affect your life in unseen and often dangerous ways!

There is no one to blame in your game, the cast of characters and their software was set up a long time ago, so get over trying to blame others. I used to blame the drug industry (I worked in it so its a qulaified blame) for what Burton Goldberg calls the “Medical Holocaust” but realize they are set up the way they are because we, collectively as a society, are the way we are. We don’t want to take full responsability for our lives, and wait until its too late so we have to reach out to an industry set up to give us ‘happy pills’ (pills or a surgery to remove what bothers us). But this never really works, the cause has never been found and so we go on (if we live) until the cause rears its ugly head once more. (“…and what rough beast, its hour come around at last, slouches toward Bethlehem to be born?“)

How does politics affect your life & health? In countless ways, starting with the PAC’s who control legislation that allows more toxins to spew into your food, your air, your water, basically all over the place.  The outright bias of the FDA in stopping natural, non-toxic treatments to be used because of the financial threat to the medical industry. The paltry amount of money spent on prevention by our government.  The lies, such as when the EPA under Christine Todd Whitman and under pressure from the Bush Administration, told residents of Manhattan that the air quality after 911 was safe and they could return to their homes. The list goes on and on.

Wake up. Start to gain a deeper understanding of this game and see how you can make better, more informed choices! You can’t save the world but you can Save yourself!

Sushi is Toxic!

Yet another piece of the puzzle showing as the planet goes, so do we.  Here we see once again a common food (sushi) loaded with heavy metals. This was taken from the respected Dr. Eades blog:

“The International Herald Tribune published an article story showing that even sushi-grade tuna is crawling with mercury, which makes fish eating now a Faustian bargain. We can get the omega-3s, but at the expense of a ton of mercury.

Recent laboratory tests found so much mercury in tuna sushi from 20 Manhattan stores and restaurants that at most of them, a regular diet of six pieces a week would exceed the levels considered acceptable by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Sushi from 5 of the 20 places had mercury levels so high that the Food and Drug Administration could take legal action to remove the fish from the market. The sushi was bought by The New York Times in October.

But maybe this is just a freaky sample. I’m not so sure. And the article goes on to state that the more expensive the tuna, the greater the contamination.

These findings reinforce results in other studies showing that more expensive tuna usually contains more mercury because it is more likely to come from a larger species, which accumulates mercury from the fish it eats. Mercury enters the environment as an industrial pollutant.”

Avoid sushi! Eat lower on the food chain, take flax oil and krill oil for Omega-3 fatty acids!
