With everyone being concerned over the economy – people are starting to find ways to save money. One way people are turning to more and more is being healthy. Sounds crazy but its true – vitamin sales are up sharply this year as people find prevention saves more money in the long run than expensive doctor’s visits and drugs. Plus it just feels better!

Health care (insurance) is a twisted system – it’s like an all you can eat buffet – it tends to incentivize sloth and gluttony! Plus it may not be there for you when you need it – in case you didn’t hear – the financial cancer has metastasized! So why not invest in the best asset you have: yourself?

Now more than ever is a great time to step up to your health and fitness to the next level. It often takes a crisis for people to wake up! Unfortunately it’s often too late.

Here are some easy ways to save money and get fit and healthy:
1) Save $500/month – Quit your gym:
Gyms can be expensive. And the truth is you don’t need all that equipment. I have clients who are now saving over $500/month by training at my home gym. Do the math:

Option A: Gym membership: $150/month
Personal training sessions: 3/week= 12/month at $95 = $1140
TOTAL: $1290

Option B: 12 PT sessions with in home personal trainer: $65 x 12 = $780
(They do cardio as I show them on their off days outside in the fresh air)

Total Savings: $510/month – or $6120 a year!

Note: Even at 2 sessions per week you still save $400/month or $4800/yr.

Even if you cannot afford personal training there are many other ways to exercise that do not require a gym.

2) Save $200/month – Stop Eating So Much:
While billions of people don’t have enough to eat, most in the US have too much to eat. Many of the poor in the world die from malnutrition while many here die from eating too much toxic food that comprises the typical American diet.

Fasting is a great way to lose weight and save money – skipping one meal a day could reduce your food bill by 33%. I’ve discussed it before, the easiest type of fast is IF (Intermittent Fasting) where you simply skip a meal – like breakfast. Try to get at least 12-16 hrs of fasting to reap the benefits.

3) $500+/month –Stop Getting Sick!
Actually this one is priceless – after all, how much is your health worth to you? Start by eating healthy with judicious use of nutritional supplements. I used to get sick 2-3 times a year, a cold, the flu and then allergies in the spring.

When I cut out the top allergens from my diet and began to aggressively take safe, non-toxic nutrients my life completely changed. A 100% turnaround. I stopped feeling congested; I didn’t get sick for over 12 years. In fact, even now when I do catch something, I can feel it ‘coming on’ for a few hours and then it goes away. I think I was actually sick, where I was stuffed up and congested – once in the last 4 yrs, mostly due, I think, because I began to eat dairy and wheat again.

The NY Times recently ran an article that people are buying vitamins and herbs more this year to try and avoid doctor and drug expenses. People know being healthy is the way to go – it’s just when they have enough money – they feel they can afford to be lazy. You have to love human nature!

Bottom line: If you want to be healthier and fit you need to exercise. You don’t need the gym. You need to eat healthy (50-75% raw, 50-75% organic). You don’t need to starve. However, if you aren’t eating like this – my research indicates you can compensate for this by adding liberal use of nutritional supplements.

Who is The Biggest Loser?

The hit TV show ‘The Biggest Loser” teams up people and has them in a boot camp style program of exercise and diet to lose weight. Once again in this matrix of deceit we’re not told the truth; that participants exercise for 3 to 4 hours a day and eat ridiculuosly low calorie diets. Plus they also have them losing water weight, often by dehydration. This is very unhealthy. The show is a real sham, read for yourself of the crazy antics done to lose weight, and how many of the participants gained weight back after the show. But thats what most people want – the quick fix.

I do love the title, as you may come to realize, this is a year of paradigm shifts. Losers will be the winners (ever hear of the ‘Sermon on the Mount? lol), people will do more by doing less, and some open minded individuals may even gain everything by giving everything up. The ‘in’ thing will be the ‘nothing’. Or maybe I am just surfing the zeitgeist too much again!

Back to losing. As in the TV show, one of the biggest thing people want to lose is fat. Its an interesting thing to think about; all the images that fat symbolizes. Unhealthy, unattractive, lazy, sloth (one of the 7 deadly sins), emotionally challenged (everyone knows over-eating is often an emotional issue), the list goes on and on. Bouncing from one cause and effect to the next, we’re like ping pong balls in an endless game. Feeling empty, we overeat (or over-work, drink, etc), then we feel fat or sick, so most reach for the quick fix – like a diet drug, or even a diet. Then the diet drug has side effects, so we take something else to deal with that. But then we realize one of the effects of all this was more weight gain – so we are back to square one. Its the same circle with any issue if you look deep enough.

Did you ever walk into the gym or somewhere else and feel fat (or unattractive)? Or feel that someone would judge or look at you and see how fat you were? What I find so funny is that at that very moment, someone WAS doing just that. They are your worst enemy. And who might that be? Why, YOU of course! Talk about sleeping with the enemy. More on that later.

Here are some practical tips on losing weight for the new year:
1) Eat Less. Exercise More. Sounds easy. But few can actually do it. Diet is really the key for losing weight, not exercise. For most people that means whole foods, lower carb (NO SUGAR), and healthy fats and proteins. Eat some protein with every meal.
2) Don’t skip meals: people who skip meals often lower their metabolism
3) Go back to 3 meals a day: All that 6 meal a day stuff I think is not good for our health. The GI tract needs time to be empty for us to detox. The only exception is post workout – have a recovery shake to build muscle.
4) Try Intermittent Fasting: This works wonders for many people. Ask me more and I will tell you how to do this.
5) Eat Organic: Researchers report that dieters with the most organochlorines (pollutants from pesticides, which are stored in fat cells) experience a greater than normal dip in metabolism as they lose weight, perhaps because the toxins interfere with the energy-burning process. Other research hints that pesticides can trigger weight gain. Always choose organic when buying peaches, apples, bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, lettuce, imported grapes, and pears; non-organic versions tend to have the highest levels of pesticides.
6) Sleep and Stress: Get a handle on these – sleep 8 hrs and get stress levels under control. Critical for weight loss.
7) Lift weights: Intense exercise like weightlifting increases insulin sensitivity, and this will help with long term weight loss.
8.) Exercise in a fasted state can increase fat burning.
9) Stay well hydrated.
10) Stop beating yourself up: The same self that got you into this problem is now beating you up for being there. Stop trusting your thoughts!

That little ‘you’ is the biggest loser – so lose it! Discover the bigger ‘YOU’ that is your source, your true self, and the key to happiness!

Red Meat: Good or Bad?

Does red meat deserve its bad name?

There have been numerous studies strongly linking the daily/frequent consumption of red meat to esophageal cancer, colorectal cancer and though tenuously, breast cancer in women in addition to health issues such as Alzheimer’s, Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. When you actually look at the reasons why red meat is bad, most of them can be sidestepped and we can still all enjoy our slabs of beef now and then without the guilt.
1. Eat Grass Fed Only:
a) Conventional cattle are fed dead animals and chicken feces in a process called rendering. This is how BSE (‘Mad Cow Disease’) is spread and how meat can infect humans with the BSE prion. This alone would turn most people off eating regular meat. Rendering is still practiced in the US on a large scale and some critics have pointed out the increasing number of Alzheimers disease as misdiagnosed mad cow disease.
b) Commercially bred cattle are also fed grain, so they usually have a higher ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-6s are the unhealthy kind and high levels have been linked to cardiovascular issues. You could sidestep this by eating grass fed beef that has been found to contain a higher amount of healthy nutrients like zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamins B-6 and B-12. You could also go for the leaner cuts of meat and reduce the fat consumed per piece of meat.
2. Eat Smaller Portions:
a) New data suggests that we only need about 20 grams of protein to stimulate muscle growth. This means we can eat smaller portions of meat which are less costly.
b) More importantly, red meat also contains a high amount of iron in a form that is more readily absorbed by the body compared to iron you would get in spinach which will only get absorbed if your body needs it. Iron, as much as we need it, is not healthy at high levels, especially for men. It accelerates membrane damage by free radicals (reactive oxygen species) as well as damage to other large molecules in the cell like DNA, RNA and proteins. DNA damage will increase the risk of getting cancer. High iron levels in the gut decrease the absorption of calcium. While your body can buffer against calcium deficiencies to a point, I could spend all day telling you what terrible things could happen if calcium levels were too low for an extended period of time. You could consider eating red meat as a treat and not as a staple. That way, your body only has to deal with sporadic increases in iron. For those that have a deficiency in iron, this may not be a major problem.
3. Eat It Rare:
a) Cooking beef at high temperatures – grilling, broiling, high temperature pan frying etc can results in formation of known carcinogens such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heterocyclic amines (HCAs). You could cook at slower temperatures, and if you must add oil to a steak, try the healthy oils like coconut that are more stable when heated.
b) Buying grass fed beef and cooking on low temperature keeps the proteins in a more natural state and may enhance bioavailability. So once again, better utilization of the food – we get the benefits with smaller portions (and less calories!).

Whole Foods and Tommy K’s in Stamford, Ct sell grass fed beef, and of the two, I prefer Tommy K’s meat selection. Rob, the owner of Tommy K, actually met with the farmers that raise the cattle!

In a recent post I listed 5 healthy breakfast ideas. One of them involved granola. Truth be told I am not a big fan of commercial granola formulas. Most all of them have some type of vegetable oil, which may be adulterated and/or high in inflammatory Omega-6 fats. Plus they often have too much sugar. Worse – if they add fruits or nuts, chances are those items were heated and as such have lost most of their nutrient value. Not good.

So I set out to make a healthier granola. I went to Tommy K’s to get the best prices on my ingredients. I was shocked – a pound of organic cinnamon was $6.95! I am a big fan of herbs and spices and buy in bulk to save money – so $6.95 for organic (high potency) cinnamon is a deal. In case you do not know, cinnamon is great for normalizing blood sugar levels and this can decrease AGE (advanced glycation end-products). So if you want to lose weight or slow the formation of wrinkles (glycation of proteins), or have a family history of diabetes, cinnamon is great to help regulate blood sugar.

Here is how I made my granola:
– 2 cups of whole oats (not instant)
– 2 tablespoons of Quinoa (a grain) to add more crunch (not required)
– 2 tablespoons of sesame seeds
– 1 table spoon vanilla extract
– 1/2 tsp cinnamon
– 1/4 cup maple syrup
– 4 tablespoons coconut oil

– Preheat oven to 300 degrees
– Put all solids in a bowl (so whatever you add, nuts or seeds as well, go in the solids bowl)
– Heat coconut oil on pan to liquify
– Add all liquids in separate bowl (oil, vanilla, syrup)
– Mix liquids and then pour in solids bowl.
– Mix all together
– Place mix in glass or metal baking tray.
– Heat mix in oven for 25 minutes (stir occasionally)
– Allow to cool so oats become dry and crispy

Thats is! Then I add my blueberries, ground flax seeds, yogurt, coconut milk, cacao chips and if needed, some stevia to sweeten. Coconut oil is one of the healthiest oils to cook with, very stable at high temperatures (no adulteration), and it takes great!

Rejoice (give thanks) for the way things are – exactly as they are now! Its a great honor to be down here on earth living the great adventure called life! It’s a game our spirits play that we all take too seriously! How often are we on automatic pilot – going to eat with the family without truly reflecting on the significance of the day? Of every day? So on Thanksgiving, appreciate even the simplest of things – your breath, the sunrise, food, etc. We all have so much to be thankful for.

Hit The Gym Before You Pig on Turkey!

“Everything You Know is Wrong” is the name of an interesting book that shows the truth behind much of what we collectively think of as truth. I have to laugh at just how stone-age we humans still are. I mean, when I was a boy it was still illegal in several states for a black person to marry a white person, gay people could not openly ‘come out’, and I was taught in school that Colombus discovered America.

After spending the last 20 years unwrapping the brain-washing we all are programmed with in order to become members of our collective tribe, you either go insane or realize that ‘humanity IS insanity’!

 I, as you guessed, did both!

First off, relating to the gym – Everything you know is wrong: On Thanksgiving I observed hordes of people hitting the cardio machines in the gym. Huffing and puffing so that after they could earn the right to indulge and not have that little voice of guilt go off inside their head!

But they have it wrong! Research indicates the most calories burned come from lifting weights – not cardio! The key is here whats called “Afterburn”. Technically its called EPOC (Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption) and it refers to an increase in fat burning after intense exercise.

After you lift weights you will continue to burn extra calories for up to 24 hours. That extra hourly caloric expenditure is more than you would burn doing an hour of cardio. Thats the magic of weight training! The key with the weights is to make it hard on the muscles and on your cardiovascular system – so keep rest periods short and do what I do with all my clients – supersets!

Supersets are hitting two or more exercises in succession with little to no rest. For example – do a bench press set and immediately do a Squat-Row on the cable pulley machine.

So when you want to indulge, hit the weights hard!

This does not mean cardio is not valuable. Cardio works with weight training to facilitate your best fitness program results. But on the holidays – hit the weights.

Turkey Time:

Ghandi once said “drink your food, chew your water”, meaning in a
figurative sense to be conscious (wake up) to what you consume. The
deliberate focus on your actions will serve you well in this hedonistic
festival of potentially gluttonous consumption. In a literal sense
chewing food (mastication) until it is a liquid before you swallow is
the healthiest way to eat. This takes time and allows the satiety signal
(that youve eaten enough) to reach your brain before you are too full!

Mind Your Mind:

So much of overeating and weight gain is ’emotional’. In fact it all is – we’re all emotional eaters and/or drinkers. Health to me has such an emotional and spiritual component it is without a doubt
more important than any exercise program you’re on. With this in mind, I encourage you all to spend as much time on this as you do on the physical aspects of health. I usually listen to all the free audio programs on the site, but he has a lot of free material to read also. One of my clients commented that he was not a Christian (my client was a devout Catholic). To this I say if you can’t see the Truth (or God) in all, you can’t see the Truth (or God) AT ALL!

How To Get Your Kid Into Harvard (or Yale)!

My graduate thesis at New York Medical College was on “Nutrition and Brain Function in Children” so I learned a few things about optimizing brain function. And of course when our brains are working, everything else works too. We are after all – controlled by our brains.

In the wealthy suburbs parents send their kids to pre-schools that cost upwards of $30,000/year. This is the supposed track to getting them into the best schools and careers possible. But do the best intentioned parents often miss the boat? I’ve got some amazing discoveries to share that you’ve probably never heard anywhere before! But first:

1.) Is This a Healthy Goal?

In a society where its increasingly obvious that the norm is unhealthy on all levels, we need to look deeper into what society has us all chasing. Perhaps here we need to ask “whats so special about Harvard (or any other school)?” Look at so called ‘health care’: the best doctors, from Harvard and Yale, are blind lackies for the Medical-Pharmaceutical Industrial Complex, using modalities designed to make massive profits, not keep people healthy. Chemotherapy for example has a long term success rate of only 2.1%. How smart is managing disease instead of promoting health?

Look at Wall Street: the best minds from Harvard and Yale (speaking symbolically here of course) were great at making themselves massive profits, but as we’re just starting to see, bringing our great nation to its knees. How ‘smart’ is blind greed?

Bloomberg News had a recent article reviewing the careers of the great financial experts who have been called in to save the economy – and it concluded they were the same ones who helped create the current disaster. It went on to state that they should instead be given subpoenas for financial fraud!

The current system does not give our children any wisdom. And in a world where the air is thick with smog, the land and water contaminated with toxins, and we’re in a global depression on top of global warming, wisdom may be more valuable than a Harvard MBA.

2.) Lets instead make our children the best possible human beings they can be:

A better, more wholistic goal then would be to help our children simply be the best they can be. If they go to Harvard, great. If not, thats great too. There is a new paradigm emerging, and your kids will live it more than you can ever imagine. It will be forced on them just as ‘the sins of the father shall be visited upon the sons’.

By realizing the winds of change you will better guide your children through the cultural shifts already starting to happen. One of community over individualism, happiness over ambition and greed, and health over fast food, fast cars and fast cures (drugs). Lead by example.

3) Stop Being So Selfish:

‘Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself’ Kahil Gilbran.

Its not about you and your kid is not your ‘mini-me’. Having children is a selfish act, but parenting is an opportunity to practice selflessness. Yet so many ‘driven’ parents are driving their kids mad trying to make them into something they weren’t. Trying to compete with other parents or having your child compete with other kids increases the liklihood of programming an undertone of unhappiness into every facet of your childs life.

4) Take Care of Your Childs Basics:

Basic means primal – what we are designed by evolution to eat. And how we are basically designed to move in this world (aka exercise). Children need whole foods and daily exercise. Giving your kids the ‘video valium’ by putting them in front of a video game or TV does them no good. They need to be moving around, developing strong bodies and neural networks through play. Yes play has a vital evolutionary role, it programs the individual for life.

Whole foods means as close to natural as possible. This does not mean foods like cereal, milk, cheeze wiz, and juice. These are a great way to ruin your childs sensitive brain chemistry. Don’t blame them the next time they throw a fit – blame the food you are feeding them. If you need to give your child milk – at least make it raw milk, or better – hemp or almond milk.

One parent who I know has an adorable son with a learning disability. Nothing major but noticable. I repeatedly told her about looking into the basics first – food allergies, adverse reactions to vaccines, etc. Simple things that a qualified (few are) doctor could test for and clear up for her son. In fact there is a great book on the Four A’s that I advise any parent of a child with allergies or behavioral and/or learning issues read.

She still has yet to read it or do anything out of her comfort zone to help her son. Yet she feeds him cookies and candy – this is normal after all. To me this is stealing the childs future right out from underneath him. Something as simple as the nutrient alpha-lipoic-acid has been used to assist heavy metal detox for kids, and yet she would have no idea what this even means.

    For most kids, the following basics apply:

-Cut out sugar, white flour and soda
-Dilute juice with water – lots of water
-Kids need lots of healthy fats – avocado, flax, coconut milk/oil, nuts, seeds, hemp, soft egg yolks.
-Get them on a good multi-vitamin & DHA (fatty acid) supplement
-Try to eliminate the main food allergens: Wheat, Soy, Dairy, Corn, and Peanuts. This is especially critical if your child has allergies, asthma, and/or behavioral or learning challenges.

My graduate thesis showed that children who had higher test scores tended to eat better, exercise, took a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement and had more active and engaged adult caretakers. Which leads me to point 5.

5) Take Care of Your Basics:

Eat right and exercise! No parent is as patient and loving when they are wired on sugar and caffeine as when they are healthy and fit. Every aspect of your life flows better when you honor the life and body you inherit for these few short decades.

Despite that voice inside telling you to not eat healthy and exercise daily we all know, logically at least, that health and fitness are investments in ourselves that pay back huge dividends. Even more so for our children, and in more ways than one! After all, you might just live long enough to see your grandchildren get into Harvard!

I’m convinced that the cumulative effects of myriad miniscule exposures to an array of chemicals may be far worse than currently thought. And the recent debacle of the FDA’s stance on Bisphenol A (BPA) where it was found to have used the opinion of the Chemical Industry only serves the point that Industry and Government are often dangerously slow to act.

One simple thing you can do is to to eat the most heavily contaminated foods in their organic version only! Here is the list of foods to buy Organic, and in bold are the more popular foods I prefer.
Eat Organic Only:

3.Bell peppers
4.Pears
5.Celery
6.Potato
7.Cherries
8. Raspberries

5 Great Breakfast Meals

Breakfast is perhaps the most important meal of the day. It literally breaks the fasting state we experience during sleep. Usually cortisol is high in the morning (this helps us wake up) so eating can help offset this elevation of stress hormone.

Many people feel too busy to eat a good breakfast, so they opt for the quickies: coffee, orange juice and either a bagel or muffin. These are some of the worst foods one can consume, and ensure long term health risks. My goals for breakfast: Low sugar, nutrient dense foods, as raw as possible, wheat free, healthy fats and of course good taste!

Breakfast can be a great way to jump start your committment to a healthy (and Whol-E) day. So here are 5 fast but healthy breakfast meals:
1) Breakfast Smoothie: This is very fast and easy. Start with some basics and build from there. My smoothie video is worth watching. I usually add 10 oz. water, 1/4 cup blueberries, 1 apple, and then a large handful of mixed greens. Blend well, then add some fish oil, or flax seed (grind in coffee grinder first). I add 2 raw eggs, but if you are not there yet, add a scoop of protein powder. I also add stevia and cinnamon to taste. These taste great and are super-nutritious!

2) Yogurt & Granola: I prefer goat or sheep milk yogurt, its healthier than cows milk. And I use a low sugar, low fat granola – FEED is a good brand, Galaxy Granola is my fav, and Bear Naked is okay if it’s all you got. I add only a little granola, and instead fill the yogurt up with blueberries, ground flax seed, some cocoa nibs (love these!), and coconut milk. I also add stevia and cinnamon to taste.

3) Oatmeal, Berries, Flax and Almonds: I add almonds &/or flax seed to practically everything. Slow cook oatmeal is best as its a lower glycemic index. Cook the oatmeal, then add almond or coconut milk when its done, plus ground flax seed and the berries. You can also add egg whites when the oatmeal is cooking and it will increase protein content. You can even add a scoop of protein powder. I also add stevia and cinnamon to taste if needed.

4) Breakfast Burrito: I am addicted to brown rice and sprouted wheat tortilla’s. You can jam them with healthy goodies and they taste amazing. For breakfast – I will cook a few eggs over easy (soft yolks are very healthy) and then add them to the tortilla (already warmed in the oven). I also add some chopped apple, avocado, almonds, sometimes goat cheese and/or flax seed, and then a healthy salad dressing (Braggs makes great salad dressings). These are fast and super healthy!

5) Egg white omelette: Several egg whites and of course, as many greens and veggies as you feel comfortable stuffing in there. I add raw onions, spinach, and mixed greens as the eggs cook. This softens up the greens and takes the edge off the onions. A slice or 2 of brown rice or sprouted grain bread could make an acceptable addition. I use avocado as a spread, but coconut oil or butter works and even ghee (raw butter), or organic butter is acceptable.

I always cook with coconut oil or butter – these are the only stable fats that do not create toxic substances when heated. And I use only stainless steel or cast iron cookware, teflon is not safe to use. Try them and realize its easy to eat healthy!

Eat Food, Not Too Much, Mostly Plants

Here is a question one of my readers recently asked me:
Q: I’m a 37 year old male. I suffer from erectile dysfunction, memory loss and depression. I’m looking for supplements to address my deficiencies. I think I have a manganese deficiency. What do you recommend?

A: I’m all for your desire to treat yourself. But thinking that a specific nutrient is the key is the wrong approach. Thats taking the conventional medicine way but instead of treating symptoms with drugs youre using nutritients. If you do want to ascertain what if any deficiencies you have, you must seek a qualified health professional (not your typical doctor) who can assess your nutrient status via blood, hair and other testing procedures.

For yours, and anyone else’s issues that are not life threatening or signs of more serious disease, you can always start some lifestyle changes yourself in addition to seeking professional care. If going solo, its best to start with the basics. A healthy diet, exercise and some form of mindfulness training are the foundation of your health and life.

Mindfulness training goes by many names; call it what you want, spirituality, religion, meditation, cognitive therapy, personal growth etc. Its a process by which the undisciplined, emotional, ego-centered voice in our head we commonly think of as ‘self’ starts to lose control to a more disciplined, balanced, rational, awakened self free of the dark energy and negative thoughts our common self lives on.

You diet must be more aligned with your evolutionary design. The recent advent of processed food, genetically modified foods, and even cooking have all ravaged the nutrient profile in modern human diets, leaving us vulnerable to a plethora of dysfunction. Combined with the modern environment full of increased toxins, increased information overload and chronic stressors from many sources and you have a recipe for disaster. So its probable that most of us will develop some type of disease and/or health concerns.

How did our ancestors eat? Usually whatever they could pick or kill from their local environment. They picked fruit, nuts, greens, and roots, and killed local game like rabbits, seals, deer, and bison. This ‘pick/kill’ diet varied all over the globe. As omnivores, humans are remarkably capable of adapting to all sorts of diets. People have thrived on high fat, low carb diets to low fat, high carbs. The macronutrients are not the key – its the fact that all these foods were raw and fresh. From whale blubber to Yucca these foods were eaten with their nutrient contents intact.

I’m not saying any cooked food is bad. Certain nutrients are made available from heating. But in general nutrients are sensitive to degradation from 4 sources: heat, light, oxygen and time. It’s not easy making the shift to more raw foods, unless you have your mind on your side. Thats another reason to make regular practice of awakening a daily ritual. If you do need to cook, use lower temperatures as this is less destructive than high temperatures.

In general – a diet rich in greens, moderate in everything else is best. Moderate grains, fruits, raw nuts and seeds, and meats. Reduce dairy, and whatever dairy you consume should be raw – not pasteurized or homogenized. Eat organic where possible, especially animal products where toxins accumulate in higher amounts. Grass fed beef, wild salmon, organic eggs are great sources of protein. I eat my eggs raw, and my beef and salmon pan seared on the outside and raw inside. Avoid wheat, eat brown rice, millet, spelt, or sprouted grain products instead.

When I first started eating raw eggs and beef, I gagged several times. It was simply a mind game I realized and quickly eliminated that silly fear. The key is to take small steps, make changes in comfortable ways that do not stress you out. For example, getting off milk – do it in stages. Go from whole milk to 2%, then 1% then mix almond milk with 1% milk at 50-50 ratio, then shift to pure almond milk. Its easy that way.

To offset modernity and its associated toxins – the use of broad spectrum nutritional products is warranted. Think of nutrition as music – the more varied the instruments are the better. Together the symphony sounds more complete. This variety of instruments is identical to nutrition – take in a variety and in general never go for one single instrument (nutrient), unless directed by as health professional. With that said let me contradict myself and give you the other side: there is good science to support the use of certain nutrients that most people are short on.

Magnesium for example is one. Most people get far too much calcium and too little magnesium. And multi-vitamins are short on it as well, so some extra magnesium is a good idea. And of course a high quality multi-vitamin.

One more thing – try to decrease caffeine, sugar and bad fats found in processed/fried foods. These items are toxic to varying degrees. Drink green tea instead of coffee.

Start with these basics and give it three to six months. See if your conditions improve. In the short term, you can take a natural PDE-5 inhibitor like the herbs cnidium and a nitric oxide agent like L-Arginine for the impotence. St. Johns Wort or L-Theanine could work for the depression, and the memory loss may be more complex than this article can go into.

How does one make these changes? Mindset – you need to have a warrior mind. Call it what you want, only a focused, clear and disciplined mind will rise above the odds. Work on your mind and the rest will follow.

Slow Down Aging with Magnesium

Thats right, Magnesium Deficiency Leads to Accelerated Aging. A recent study showed that human cells grown in a magnesium deficient environment had accelerated aging. One of the mechanisms of this aging was an increased loss of telomere length. Telomeres are the protective regions on the end of chromosomes that keep all your cells dividing properly. Each time they divide, you age, in essence because the length of telomere shortens. This is why you only have so many cell divisions before you age and die.

Now we realize that our environment, not just nutrients like magnesium but stressors like toxic thoughts, toxic chemicals etc can also affect telomere length. Magnesium is especially crucial because Americans are notoriously deficient in magnesium – our soils are depleted of it from the ravages of industrial farming that literally causes fertile top-soil to wash away every year.

Foods high in magnesium include greens like Kale and Spinach, nuts like almonds and cashews – and if you can afford, organic as you typically will find more nutrients like magnesium in organic produce.

Supplemental magnesium is also a good idea for most as few eat healthy enough to get adequate amounts of magnesium. Look for a magnesium in a ‘Chelate’ form such as magnesium aspartate, or magnesium carbonate.

Sushi is Toxic!

Yet another piece of the puzzle showing as the planet goes, so do we.  Here we see once again a common food (sushi) loaded with heavy metals. This was taken from the respected Dr. Eades blog:

“The International Herald Tribune published an article story showing that even sushi-grade tuna is crawling with mercury, which makes fish eating now a Faustian bargain. We can get the omega-3s, but at the expense of a ton of mercury.

Recent laboratory tests found so much mercury in tuna sushi from 20 Manhattan stores and restaurants that at most of them, a regular diet of six pieces a week would exceed the levels considered acceptable by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Sushi from 5 of the 20 places had mercury levels so high that the Food and Drug Administration could take legal action to remove the fish from the market. The sushi was bought by The New York Times in October.

But maybe this is just a freaky sample. I’m not so sure. And the article goes on to state that the more expensive the tuna, the greater the contamination.

These findings reinforce results in other studies showing that more expensive tuna usually contains more mercury because it is more likely to come from a larger species, which accumulates mercury from the fish it eats. Mercury enters the environment as an industrial pollutant.”

Avoid sushi! Eat lower on the food chain, take flax oil and krill oil for Omega-3 fatty acids!

Drowning in Poisons

Another of countless studies showing just how SEVERELY polluted our planet, and our bodies are. The true depth and breath of this problem is being kept hidden from the public.  Children are our “Canary in a coal mine” in that they are much more sensitive to exposures than adults. And children are increasingly developing neurological, immunological andf behavioral problems due largely to the toxic loads their bodies are subjected to. We might literally poison ourselves into extinction if current trends persist.

WASHINGTON – A recent study by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that three quarters of 285 commonly consumed foods and beverages are contaminated with perchlorate, a toxic rocket fuel ingredient. According to the study, every day, the average two-year-old is exposed to more than half of the EPA “safe” dose (RfD) of perchlorate from food alone. This is bad news for children in communities in 28 states who also are exposed to perchlorate through contaminated tap water. Very low levels of perchlorate in tap water will cause the average two year old to exceed EPA’s safe exposure level.

Two-year-olds are particularly vulnerable because they eat and drink substantial amounts of food and water relative to their small size. An Environmental Working Group analysis of FDA data found that perchlorate levels as low as 4 parts per billion (ppb) in tap water could expose the average two-year-old to an unsafe dose of the rocket fuel contaminant every single day.

FDA’s finding of high food exposures for small children makes clean up of perchlorate-contaminated water imperative. Perchlorate in tap water can be controlled through filtration and clean up. Perchlorate in food is harder to manage because the source of contamination is not clear, although contaminated irrigation water is one known source where levels could be reduced.

Most Dangerous Foods to Eat?

Forget about industrialized meats and processed foods which are typically very unhealthy on their own. With regards to fruits, this study shows the most poisonous:

  • Peaches and apples topped the Dirty Dozen list. Almost 97 percent of peaches tested positive for pesticides, and almost 87 percent had two or more pesticide residues. About 92 percent of apples tested positive, and 79 percent had two or more pesticides. The rest of the Dirty Dozen include sweet bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, pears, imported grapes, spinach, lettuce, and potatoes.
  • Onions, avocados, and sweet corn headed the Consistently Clean list. For all three foods, more than 90 percent of the samples tested had no detectable pesticide residues. Others on the Consistently Clean list include pineapples, mango, asparagus, sweet peas, kiwi, bananas, cabbage, broccoli, and papaya.

There is growing scientific consensus that small doses of pesticides can adversely affect people, especially during vulnerable periods of fetal development and childhood when exposures can have long lasting effects. Because the toxic effects of pesticides are worrisome, not well understood, or in some cases completely unstudied, shoppers are wise to minimize exposure to pesticides whenever possible.

While washing and rinsing fresh produce can reduce levels of some pesticides, it does not eliminate them. Peeling also reduces exposures, but valuable nutrients often go down the drain with the peel. The best option is to eat a varied diet, wash all produce, and choose organic when possible to reduce exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.

Although the Shopper’s Guide only measures pesticide residues on produce, buying organic also makes sense if you’re concerned about bacterial contamination. Organic farmers meet all the sanitation standards required of conventional growers and, on, top of that, meet tight restrictions on the use of compost and other organic material that do not apply to conventional fruit and vegetable growers.

Honey for Post-Workout Insulin Boost

Post workout its important to get insulin up as it acts to facilitate recovery and muscle growth. This is the only time of the day we want elevated insulin. To do this we use a protein carb drink – whey isolate combined with some type of high glycemic index (GI) sugar. My top choice is honey because it has so many other nutritional benefits that other sugar sources do not. Honey is a wholefood  and as such the best source versus refined sugar sources.  For example, honey has the sugar trehelose, which positively affects our brain and central nervous system. Honey also has potent anti-bacterial activity, trace minerals, and other nutrients.

 Here is one study supporting the use of honey: over time it appears to help shift weight gain away from fat and towards muscle (providing you are exercising hard enough)

ABSTRACT: To determine whether honey, sucrose, and mixed sugars as in honey have different effects on weight gain, 40 6-wk-old Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a powdered diet that was either sugar free or contained 8% sucrose, 8% mixed sugars as in honey, or 10% honey freely for 6 wk. Weight gain and food intake were assessed weekly, and at completion of the study blood samples were removed for measurement of blood sugar (HbA1c) and a fasting lipid profile. The animals were then minced and total percentage body fat and protein measured.
Overall percentage weight gain was significantly lower in honey-fed rats than those fed sucrose or mixed sugars, despite a similar food intake. Weight gains were comparable for rats fed honey and a sugar free diet although food intake was significantly higher in honey-fed rats.

Research suggests that, contrary to previous belief, our behavior and our environmental conditions may program sections of our children’s DNA. New evidence about how genes interact with the environment suggests that many industrial chemicals may be more ominously dangerous than previously thought. It is increasingly clear that the effects of toxic exposure may be passed on through generations, in ways that are still not fully understood. “This introduces the concept of responsibility into genetics and inheritance,” said Dr. Moshe Szyf, a researcher at McGill University in Montreal, “This may revolutionize medicine. You aren’t eating and exercising just for yourself, but for your lineage.”1
The new field of genetic research, called epigenetics, involves what scientists are referring to as a “second genetic code” which influences how genes act in the body. If DNA is the hardware of inheritance, the epigenetic system is the software. The epigenetic system determines which genes get turned “off” or “on” and how much of a certain protein they produce.
It is this switching system that allows the genetic material in each cell to influence the creation of proteins—which ones are manufactured, in what sequence, and how many. Proteins are the building blocks of our bodies. The chemicals and hormones in our bodies are proteins. They determine, in large part, how we look, how we feel, even how we act.1
Now, it seems that this chemical switching system may also act in reverse. In most cases, epigenetic changes (changes to DNA from current environmental conditions) are not passed from parents to their offspring. Scientists are still not sure how—but genes seem to be “wiped clean” after a sperm fertilizes an egg. Based on the recent data, however, researchers are intrigued by the notion that some of the genetic changes influenced by our diet, our behaviors, or our environment, may be passed on from generation to generation.
On average, 1,800 new chemicals are registered with the federal government each year and about 750 of these find their way into products, all with hardly any testing for health or environmental effects. The bad news about chemical contamination is steadily mounting, while the number of new chemicals is steadily increasing. Many critics of the chemical and pharmaceutical industries are renewing their admonitions that government agencies practice the “precautionary principle”—the rule of “do no harm first” in the approval of new drugs and chemicals.
In 2005, the European Union responded to this situation by trying to enact a new law called Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals (REACH), which requires that chemicals be tested before they are sold—not after. As they say in Europe, “No data, no market.” At the same time, US and European chemical industries—and the White House—began working overtime to subvert the European effort to enact REACH. Their efforts failed, however, and the REACH act was adopted by the European Union in December, 2006.2 Chemical companies throughout the US and Europe are still struggling with how they will respond to the new requirements.

Basically this story tells us that environmental influences (like our mother’s diet and her exposure to toxic chemicals) are far more important to us than anyone suspected just a decade ago.
It turns out that environmental influences shape us from the moment of conception onward, and the earliest months and years of life are the most important ones. It is called “fetal programming” and it means our first environment (the womb) can determine what sorts of diseases will afflict us later in life. Furthermore, some of these early influences can be inherited by our offspring and even by their offspring. So your personal pattern of disease may have been set by your grandmother’s diet, or by her exposure to toxicants.
These findings imply that keeping toxic industrial chemicals out of the environment is far more urgent than anyone has previously thought. With more than 1,000 chemicals presently entering commercial channels each year with almost no health or safety testing, this is not welcome news.
In May 2007, a group of two hundred scientists from five continents issued strongly worded consensus statement (the “Faroes Statement”) saying that early exposure to common chemicals leaves babies more likely to develop serious diseases later in life, including diabetes,

attention deficits, certain cancers, thyroid disorders, and obesity, among others.
Notably, the scientists urged governments not to wait for more scientific certainty but to take precautionary action now to protect fetuses and children from toxic exposures.
Most of the mainstream press continued to tiptoe around this story, with a few important exceptions, until May 2007 when the Faroes statement blew the story open. Now that it is out in the open, we’ll have to see if the mainstream press has what it takes to explain the far-reaching ramifications of these findings.

e concerns, warns Parry, over how the Pentagon judges “threats” and who falls under the category of “those who would harm us.” A Pentagon official said the Counterintelligence Field Activity’s TALON program has amassed files on antiwar protesters.

In the view of some civil libertarians, a form of martial law already exists in the U.S. and has been in place since shortly after the September 11 attacks when Bush issued Military Order Number One, which empowered him to detain any noncitizen as an international terrorist or enemy combatant. Today that order extends to U.S. citizens as well.

Farrell ends her article with the conclusion that while much speculation has been generated by KBR’s contract to build huge detention centers within the U.S., “The truth is, we won’t know the real purpose of these centers unless ‘contingency plans are needed.’ And by then, it will be too late.”

The contract of the Halliburton subsidiary KBR to build immigrant detention facilities is part of a longer-term Homeland Security plan titled ENDGAME, which sets as its goal the removal of “all removable aliens” and “potential terrorists.” In the 1980s Richard Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld discussed similar emergency detention powers as part of a super-secret program of planning for what was euphemistically called “Continuity of Government” (COG) in the event of a nuclear disaster. At the time, Cheney was a Wyoming congressman, while Rumsfeld, who had been defense secretary under President Ford, was a businessman and CEO of the drug company G.D. Searle.

These men planned for suspension of the Constitution, not just after nuclear attack, but for any “national security emergency,” which they defined in Executive Order 12656 of 1988 as: “Any occurrence, including natural disaster, military attack, technological or other emergency, that seriously degrades or seriously threatens the national security of the United States.” Clearly September 11 would meet this definition, and did, for COG was instituted on that day. As the Washington Post later explained, the order “dispatched a shadow government of about 100 senior civilian managers to live and work secretly outside Washington, activating for the first time long-standing plans.”

What these managers in this shadow government worked on has never been reported. But it is significant that the group that prepared ENDGAME was, as the Homeland Security document puts it, “chartered in September 2001.” For ENDGAME’s goal of a capacious detention capability is remarkably similar to Oliver North’s controversial Rex-84 “readiness exercise” for COG in 1984. This called for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to round up and detain 400,000 imaginary “refugees,” in the context of “uncontrolled population movements” over the Mexican border into the United States.

When the story about Kellogg, Brown and Root’s contract for emergency detention centers broke, immigration was not the hot button issue it is today. Given this, the language in Halliburton’s press release, stating that the centers would be built in the event of an “emergency influx of immigrants into the U.S.,” raised eyebrows, especially among those familiar with Rex-84 and other Reagan-era initiatives. FEMA’s former plans ‘for the detention of at least 21 million American Negroes in assembly centers or relocation camps’ added to the distrust, and the second stated reason for the KBR contract, “to support the rapid development of new programs,” sent imaginations reeling.

While few in the mainstream media made the connection between KBR’s contract and previous programs, Fox News eventually addressed this issue, pooh-poohing concerns as the province of “conspiracy theories” and “unfounded” fears. My article attempted to sift through the speculation, focusing on verifiable information found in declassified and leaked documents which proved that, in addition to drawing up contingency plans for martial law, the government has conducted military readiness exercises designed to round up and detain both illegal aliens and U.S. citizens.
How concerned should Americans be? Recent reports are conflicting and confusing:

In May, 2006, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) began “Operation Return to Sender,” which involved catching illegal immigrants and deporting them. In June, however, President Bush vowed that there would soon be “new infrastructures” including detention centers designed to put an end to such “catch and release” practices.

Though Bush said he was “working with Congress to increase the number of detention facilities along our borders,” Rep. Bennie Thompson, ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee, said he first learned about the KBR contract through newspaper reports.

Fox News recently quoted Pepperdine University professor Doug Kmiec, who deemed detention camp concerns “more paranoia than reality” and added that KBR’s contract is most likely “something related to (Hurricane) Katrina” or “a bird flu outbreak that could spur a mass quarantine of Americans.” The president’s stated desire for the U.S. military to take a more active role during natural disasters and to enforce quarantines in the event of a bird flu outbreak, however, have been roundly denounced.

Concern over an all-powerful federal government is not paranoia, but active citizenship. As Thomas Jefferson explained, “even under the best forms of government, those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.” From John Adams’s Alien and Sedition Acts to FDR’s internment of Japanese Americans, the land of the free has held many contradictions and ironies. Interestingly enough, Halliburton was at the center of another historical controversy, when Lyndon Johnson’s ties to a little-known company named Kellogg, Brown and Root caused a congressional commotion—particularly after the Halliburton subsidiary won enough wartime contracts to become one of the first protested symbols of the military-industrial complex. Back then they were known as the “Vietnam builders.” The question, of course, is what they’ll be known as next.
